A sales team is arguably the most vital lifeline to any company. Other departments are undoubtedly important, but every business has a product or service to sell. And how well they’re selling determines the progress of the entire company. No organization can grow without increased revenue, and a sales team does just that.

That’s why we created a list of 5 mindset rules to increase the sales you generate. Share them with your team or implement them yourself to reach your maximum sales potential!

Compete With Yourself

The first rule is to consistently stay in competition with yourself. Improve 1% every day and you’ll always be better than you were a year ago, and that’s what matters.

You ultimately want to compete with yourself because constantly comparing yourself to people who have more experience than you is discouraging. This is why instead of making people into your adversary, you want to learn everything you can from the people around you.

Competing with yourself means abandoning the toxic culture of working against each other to get ahead. When you’re on a sales team, you’re all on the same side.

Don’t step over others to get ahead, beat your own goals and records instead! To succeed in a sales environment, you need great relationships with your team. That’s why you should stay in competition with yourself.

Dedication

You do not need a college degree to be successful in sales, but you do need dedication.

The wonderful thing about a sales career is that it requires skills you can learn outside of a classroom.

As I mentioned, you should be learning as much as you can from the people around you. However, you need the dedication to learn and persevere through trial and error.

The saying “mistakes are the best teachers” is true for your sales career. It takes dedication to keep moving forward even when you fail and become the best sales professional you can be.

Own 100% Of Failures

When it comes to sales, it’s not IF you’ll fail, it’s WHEN.

Failing is inevitable. In fact, if you’re not making the occasional mistake or misstep, you’re not trying hard enough.

So if failure is inevitable, the true test of character is how you react when you fail. You shouldn’t blame others or shift responsibility onto something else.

It’s a common misconception that blaming outside factors will save you from repercussions. But all blaming does is limit your success. No one can help you, or advise you on how to improve if you don’t accept failure in the first place.

Never Stop Upgrading Your Skills

To become successful, you need to keep upgrading your skills. It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or if you’re the top performer–keep developing your skills and graduating to the next level.

There are tons of resources out there to help you up your game. SalesForce’s TrailHead and HubSpot’s Academy are two great places to start. They both offer sales coaching and modules.

The top salespeople are constantly improving, and your skill set is critical for improvement. That’s why you need rule #4 to thrive in this industry.

Run Yourself Like A Business

To maximize your wins, constantly study your data to see what’s increasing your numbers, or what isn’t.

Then optimize your time by increasing what works for you. Maybe after you look at the data, you find that you perform better on the phone than email. If that’s the case, increase your time on the phone and max out the value you get with that channel. Just like a business, spend the greatest amount of time on the channels and activities that give you the best results and ROI.

Out of all of our mindset rules, tracking progress and making decisions based on the data will help you the most. It’s the key to sales success! So become obsessed with studying the data and optimizing accordingly.

Don’t forget:

  • Compete with yourself
  • Have consistent dedication
  • Own your failures
  • Continuously upgrade your skills
  • Study the data and optimize

What makes sales such a great profession is that anyone can succeed in this industry, regardless of your background or education. All it takes is the right state of mind.

These mindset rules will change your sales game and yield BIG sales results. We guarantee it!
